Tjaka

Meet Tjaka: a Brisbane band whose funky and distinctive sound are taking the music scene by storm.

It’s hard not to marvel at the immense musical talent of the trio, who have developed a unique, yet sophisticated sound that masterfully incorporates the didjeribone (a mix of a trombone and didgeridoo) and the facebass (a seismic microphone used in the mouth). The two brothers, Geoff and Jake, are proud descendants of the Djabera Djabera tribe in the Western Australian Kimberley and pay homage to their culture through their music, coalescing into a perfect blend of pop, funk and rap with reggae undertones. The distinguishing flare of the band doesn’t stop there: the raw talent of the electric guitarist, Felix, ties the trio together.

The band was interviewed in their home studio, an impressive setup that allows them to experiment and formulate their sound to the fullest. The band first debuted on 4ZZZ in December of 2020, playing an array of gigs through despite the Covid pandemic stacking the odds against them.

It is clear that the band has fun with their music, but that doesn’t stop them from laying out insightful commentaries on social and cultural issues in their work.

Keep an eye out for Tjaka, they’re certainly one to watch!
